Tailblock: Pt 1

Between working, going to school, surfing, and trying to keep my sanity, I haven't even worked on the board since summer. All excuses aside, I'm back at it and hope to finish the woodworking aspect by the end of Christmas break. It feels weird cutting off the tail. More progress soon.

Sanding

I've sanded a lot off the board, but still have aways to go in cleaning up the lines. I also cut off the excess on the tail. I need an orbital sander.

Attaching the deck

With school starting, my free time has gone out the window, but I managed to find the time to glue on the deck. I've started to sand down the deck too but haven't taken pictures of that yet.. As you may have noticed, I no longer have full reign over the garage. It turns out if you deprive one of parking in the garage long enough, they become angry.

Completed Rails

Both rails are all glued up now and I cut off the excess wood on the rails to a rough outline. I've started to hand plane/sand them down the rails to the right thickness so the deck will lay on flat, but still have a ways to go. I'm working on the tailblock and should be able to glue the deck on in the next couple of days. I also picked up a pair of gephart keel's from the good guy's over at true ames yesterday. It's starting to look like a surfboard!

Rails Update #2

I finished gluing up all the rail strips on one side of the board and am about a third done on the other side. I couldn't stand looking out the super rough outline I had cut out earlier anymore, so I cut off the excess wood on the side of the board that I had finished the rails on. Hopefully I'll finish the other side in the next couple of days.

Rails Update

All the rail strips were beaded and coved with the help of my buddies Blake and Josh last week and I've started to build up the rails. Getting my wisdom teeth pulled has slowed down the process but I'm still happy with the progress I've made. The nose came together well. I had had some initial doubts as to how to herringbone the nose because of the bead and cove, but with some handsanding it worked well. I got some more clamps today and more pictures should be coming soon.

Router Bit

I was way stoked today on what came in the mail:

With the help of a couple buddies I managed to get all the rails beaded but the allure of In-n-out was too great so the coving will happen tomorrow. More pictures coming soon.

5'8" Retro Fish

So as some of you may know, I've started working on building a hollow wooden surfboard. Here's the progress so far.

More coming soon.. Just waiting for a bead and cove router bit to  come in the mail so I can do the rails.

Best wishes,
